Background
Studying phenotypic and genetic characteristics of age at onset (AAO) and polarity at onset (PAO) in bipolar disorder can provide new insights into disease pathology and facilitate the development of screening tools.
AimsTo examine the genetic architecture of AAO and PAO and their association with bipolar disorder disease characteristics.
MethodGenome-wide association studies (GWASs) and polygenic score (PGS) analyses of AAO (n = 12 977) and PAO (n = 6773) were conducted in patients with bipolar disorder from 34 cohorts and a replication sample (n = 2237). The association of onset with disease characteristics was investigated in two of these cohorts.
ResultsEarlier AAO was associated with a higher probability of psychotic symptoms, suicidality, lower educational attainment, not living together and fewer episodes. Depressive onset correlated with suicidality and manic onset correlated with delusions and manic episodes. Systematic differences in AAO between cohorts and continents of origin were observed. This was also reflected in single-nucleotide variant-based heritability estimates, with higher heritabilities for stricter onset definitions. Increased PGS for autism spectrum disorder (β = −0.34 years, s.e. = 0.08), major depression (β = −0.34 years, s.e. = 0.08), schizophrenia (β = −0.39 years, s.e. = 0.08), and educational attainment (β = −0.31 years, s.e. = 0.08) were associated with an earlier AAO. The AAO GWAS identified one significant locus, but this finding did not replicate. Neither GWAS nor PGS analyses yielded significant associations with PAO.
ConclusionsAAO and PAO are associated with indicators of bipolar disorder severity. Individuals with an earlier onset show an increased polygenic liability for a broad spectrum of psychiatric traits. Systematic differences in AAO across cohorts, continents and phenotype definitions introduce significant heterogeneity, affecting analyses.

Summary
The resurgence of interest in recent years in the importance of education and training in furthering the goals of economic progress, fuller employment, and social integration coincides with a new emphasis on the need for “lifelong learning,” both to respond to current changes in the organization and technology of production and service delivery and to counter the socially disruptive effects of increased labor market flexibility.
Although there has been a great deal of interest in and research on initial education prior to labor market entry, continuing job-related training is also believed to be highly influential in determining both corporate or organizational performance as well as individual earnings and career development, although the empirical research on this topic is much more limited. Given that the impact of initial educational attainment on both labor market entry and on subsequent career development is already well established in the research literature, we focus in this chapter on continuing education and training of employed workers.
It should be noted that there has also been a parallel interest in the effects of education and training targeted on the unemployed, and that this field has generated a substantial body of sophisticated empirical research that has already been extensively reviewed (see, e.g., Fay, 1996; Friedlander et al., 1997; Heckman et al., 1999). Most empirical work has been confined to relatively short-term employment and earnings effects.

Youth unemployment remains a significant problem in most EU countries. In this paper we explore the dynamics of this problem by comparing young people's transitions from unemployment to employment in nine member states. Using the first two waves of the European Community Household Panel, we follow the progress of 14,600 young Europeans over a two-year period. We examine how the employment prospects of young unemployed people are affected by their country of residence and by their personal characteristics such as age, gender, parenthood and educational attainment as well as by previous work experience and unemployment duration. We attempt to unpack the cross-national differences in the underlying transition rate by substituting country names with macro/institutional level variables such as youth long-term unemployment rates, active labour market policy expenditure, employment regulation regimes and benefit provisions for unemployed young people.

Summary
The last decade and a half was a critical period for the working class in the advanced capitalist countries. Beginning in the early 1970s, the rate of economic growth declined throughout the advanced capitalist world, while unemployment and inflation increased dramatically. The crisis marked the end of the long postwar boom of the 1950s and 1960s, in which sustained and rapid economic growth combined with relatively full employment and price stability, and during which workers in most advanced capitalist societies succeeded in extracting rising real wages and increasing shares of national income.
While labor unions and the political movements of the working class made impressive economic and political gains during the boom, there is general consensus that the crisis has turned the tide against labor; labor unions and working-class political parties have been placed on the defensive, their bargaining power has been eroded, and the movements themselves have become fragmented and isolated (Bowles 1982; Armstrong, Glyn, and Harrison 1984; and Griffin, O'Connell, and McCammon 1989). It has also been observed, however, that while all of the advanced capitalist countries shared in the experience of sluggish growth and inflation since the early 1970s, nations responded to the crisis in very different ways, resulting in a greater degree of variation between countries in macroeconomic performance than could have been observed during the previous expansionary period (Cameron 1984; Goldthorpe 1984).

In recent years research has been directed to looking for the origins of agriculture and to finding the causes of the transition from hunting and gathering to food production and the domestication of plants and animals. From these studies it has become apparent first, that the transition occurred several times and in several places in prehistory; secondly, that the mechanisms underlying the transition are quite complex; and thirdly that the transition occurred in some regions but not in others, in spite of the prevalence of similar environmental conditions and patterns of exploitation.
